Curriculum
At P.S. 118, we believe in developing strong foundational literacy skills grounded in the Science of Reading.
We understand that the best way to develop strong readers is to equip them with the skills necessary to decode words (sound them out) and comprehend them (understand what words mean and the stories they convey).
Phonics
Fundations (K-3) is a research-based program that provides systematic and explicit instruction in essential literacy skills for students in kindergarten through third grade. Rooted in the science of reading, it builds a strong foundation in phonics, phonemic awareness, and handwriting. Through a structured and cumulative approach, Fundations supports early readers in developing the skills they need for reading and spelling success.
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum (K-2) forms the cornerstone of our literacy approach, emphasizing the development of key skills such as recognizing, blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds, which are the essential building blocks for reading fluency.
Reading and Writing
Wit & Wisdom is our adopted English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, designed to bring rich, meaningful content into every classroom. Rooted in the belief that learning should spark wit, wisdom, wonder, and rigor, it weaves together literature, history, art, and science for a truly integrated ELA experience. Through diverse, complex texts, it builds deep knowledge, supports all learners, and helps students meet academic standards—while cultivating a lifelong love of reading, writing, and thinking.
Mathematics
Illustrative Mathematics (IM) is a problem-based core math curriculum designed to meet both content and practice standards while supporting meaningful learning for all students. Through solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, students actively engage in doing math and develop deep understanding by constructing logical arguments and using precise language. Illustrative Math helps students develop a deep understanding of math concepts—not just how to do math, but why it works—through hands-on problem solving, reasoning and discussions with peers and teachers.
Science
Our science program is rooted in rigorous, grade-level science standards and designed to spark curiosity in every young scientist. Through hands-on experiments, inquiry-based learning, and real-world connections, students explore the wonders of the natural world in meaningful and memorable ways.
A highlight of our program is our state-of-the-art hydroponics lab which is a unique, immersive learning environment where students dive into plant biology, environmental science, and sustainable food production. This hands-on platform not only brings science to life but also empowers students to think critically, experiment boldly, and grow into the problem-solvers of tomorrow.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies program is built on a strong foundation of grade-level standards, guiding students through a rich exploration of history, civics, geography, and economics. Rooted in content that is both rigorous and relevant, the curriculum enables students to make meaningful connections between the past and the world they inhabit today.
Throughout the year, we incorporate multicultural monthly observances that celebrate the diverse voices, cultures, and contributions that have shaped our society. These intentional moments of learning deepen students' understanding, empathy, and appreciation for the world around them—empowering them to grow into thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens of the future.
Physical Education
At P.S. 118, our Physical Education program promotes healthy bodies, confident minds, and strong character. Students engage in a wide range of fun and inclusive activities that foster physical development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. As part of our curriculum, students learn age-appropriate techniques and the fundamentals of sports such as basketball, tennis, and more—building coordination, strategy, and confidence through structured skill-building. PE at PS 118 is more than just exercise—it’s about encouraging every child to move with purpose, play with joy, and grow together.
Art
At P.S. 118, we believe strongly that art is an integral part of our students’ educational journey. We strive to provide creative outlets for all students and are thrilled to have a full-time art teacher to nurture their artistic talents. Students learn foundational techniques while creating artwork that connects to what they are learning in the classroom. Our art program encourages young artists to take creative risks, develop their unique voices, and gain a deeper appreciation for the role of art in the world around them. At P.S. 118, every child is an artist, and our art room is a place where imagination comes to life.
