Enrichment

Our 4th and 5th grade students have the exciting opportunity to participate in an enrichment program that takes place on Friday afternoons.  The students get a choice of one program below. They remain in the same program for two years, in order to become an expert in that area. 4th grade students have enrichment during 6th period on Friday afternoons, and 5th grade enrichment takes place during 7th period.

Band:

The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music oversees this program and provides the teachers, all of whom are professional musicians. Children are provided with high quality instruction and loaned an instrument to use for the school year. Students are taught in ensemble groups: clarinets, flutes, percussion and trumpets.

Chess:

Our Chess class will allow children to learn and enjoy chess while experiencing healthy competition and team spirit. Chess is used to develop critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and competitive maturity. Let’s Play Chess will foster sportsmanship and respect while learning the basics of how to play Chess. Children then practice sharpening those skills and learn new strategies each week to advance their play.

Step Dance:

Step students will acquire the discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, rhythm, creativity, skills, and enthusiasm required for the art of Step Dance. By learning more about the history of step, members will learn to express themselves through the rhythm, movement, and song they create, using their bodies as their instrument.
