Elizabeth Garraway
Ms. Garraway is a firm proponent of public education; she herself is a graduate of the New York City School System. She grew up in Brooklyn where she graduated from Midwood High School. After earning her BA in Anthropology and Spanish at Syracuse University, she earned a Master’s degree in Spanish at New York University. Before committing to her work as an educator, Ms. Garraway lived, studied and traveled extensively though out Europe for seven years. She earned a degree (Licence) in ethnology from L'Université de Paris VIII St. Denis. In 1995, she began her teaching career as a Spanish and French teacher (Satellite West Middle School, Benjamin Banneker High School and The Secondary School for Journalism). While on staff at Benjamin Banneker High School, she co-founded and led The International Exchange Program taking 65 students as well as 11 teachers on an 12 day study tour to Spain and France. This life changing program had a lasting impact on her students who returned home with new ideas and perspectives about other cultures which helped them to reflect on their own lives and choices they make. Ms. Garraway also holds a Masters Degree in Education from The College of New Rochelle and completed her School District Leader Certificate at Stony Brook.
In 2005, Elizabeth Garraway was actively recruited by Principal Elizabeth Phillips for the position of Assistant Principal for the acclaimed 321 Elementary School in Park Slope Brooklyn. Ms. Garraway’s leadership was evident in her extraordinary dedication and energy as well as her passion for excellence and educational innovation. Over the next 8 years, Ms. Garraway’s responsibilities grew to include a wide range of services and contributions to the 321 community. As an integral team member of the pre-k-5 school, Ms. Garraway served as the Special Education Supervisor, the Safety Committee Team Leader, Testing Coordinator, Student Council Advisor, Peer Mediator Coordinator, and Supervisor of grades 4, 5 and Pre- K. She provided daily leadership, support and supervision for students and staff and was involved in the design, implementation and supervision of professional development plans for teachers and paraprofessionals. In addition, Ms. Garraway developed and assessed programs that supported at-risk students, English Language Learners and students with IEPs. Furthermore, as the Special Education Supervisor, she facilitated collaboration between general education teachers, special education service providers, DOE network liaisons and parents.
While these duties and responsibilities are impressive, Ms. Garraway’s greatest strength may lie in her ability to productively engage with a wide range of “constituents” - from children, to staff, to parents, to professional providers, to community stakeholders and elected officials. As a strong advocate for the value of diversity, Ms. Garraway’s warmth, strong work ethic and genuine desire to collaborate models best practices. She was beloved by staff and children alike who recognized in Ms. Garraway the rare combination of showing compassion while expressing firm and clear expectations bolstering her vision that providing a rigorous, stimulating and nurturing environment will endow students with tools they need to reach their fullest potential.
Ms. Garraway lives in Brooklyn with her four children and her husband who is also an educator in a NYC public high school.
