Homework
We believe that students should read every day at home. They should be encouraged to read every night. Students are more likely to read if they can choose what they read. Their reading comprehension improves when they are exposed to different genres and kinds of print. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, graphic novels, comic books... Labels, recipes, newspapers, movie credits, game instructions, are also important in daily life.
We began our first year of non-traditional home work in 2016-17. Ms. Hernandez, Mr. Weeks and a former PS 118 teacher Ms. Willeford created Exercise your Brains. Students are given a monthly menu of activities they can work on outside of school. These activities are created to help extend students' critical thinking and build a bridge between home and school. Students are collaborating across grades and have produced amazing projects that they share with their classmates. We encourage our students to do 2 EYB’s per month. We hope that this work will help our students to become great speakers, collaborators and presenters.
