Math Workshop at PS 118
We use the Engage Common Core curriculum and supplement using Math in the City units. As a school, we are strongly committed to a concept-based, problem-solving, hands-on approach to mathematics that goes beyond arithmetic. We also know that children need to learn and practice basic math facts so that they can calculate quickly and efficiently. While Engage is a challenging curriculum, it does need to be modified to include inquiry and student work time. In addition to Engage and teacher developed materials, we also use materials developed by Math in the City—particularly the context problems. And we provide children with computation practice and differentiated math instruction. Our math pacing calendar outlines our program for each grade. We have also developed math skills that we expect each child to have learned by the end of the year, and these are available on our google drive and in our math pacing calendar. One of the goals that we discussed is differentiating instruction for our high learners.
